Cineforum “Robert Bresson” and the Asian Film Festival

The Cineforum “Robert Bresson” is a non-profit cultural association founded in 2000 to spread film culture. In 2002 it organized the Taiwan Film Festival and since 2003, the Asian Film Festival, that brings together the best of the cinema of the Far East countries, with films from thirteen countries, such as: China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, South Korea, Japan, Laos, Cambodia. The film includes a competition with sixteen films and five awards awarded by a jury of film critics, to the best film, best director, best actor, best actress, and most original film in competition. The second section, always competitive, called “Newcomers”, presents eight films by debuting directors and new talents. Over the years, homages have been reserved to Wang Xiao Shuai, Tsai Ming-liang, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Chen Kaige, Ann Hui, Brillante Mendoza, Jia Zhang-ke, Stanley Kwan, Peter Chan, Shinya Tsukamoto and Emily Tang; moreover, some of the most mainstream movies out of competition.

From 2002 to 2010 the festival took place in Rome, thanks to the intense and fruitful relations with the embassies of the countries of the Far East, their Chambers of Commerce, the Institutes of Culture and the film Commission. The festival and the association have always interloquited and have been supported by local institutions and various sponsors.

From 2006 to 2010, thanks to the support of our embassies in the countries of the Far East, the Cineforum “Robert Bresson” organized film and culture festivals in Indonesia (2006), Vietnam, for the “Italian Rainbow”, (2007)in Malaysia and Thailand, (2008), in India (2009). From 2011 to 2014 the Asian Film Festival took place in Reggio Emilia, thanks to the support of the Palazzo Magnani Foundation, the Province of Reggio Emilia and the Emilia Romagna Region, as well as various private sponsors.

In 2016, the thirteenth edition of the Asian Film Festival took place in Carpi, while in 2017, one time in June and one time in December, in Bologna, at the Cineteca.

The fifteenth edition will take place in Bologna, at the Cineteca, from 21st to 28th May.
